10 Mar 2017 - Puerto Rico Day 2

The day started with a mixology tour at the Bacardi distillery. I have enjoyed many adult beverage tours in Ireland and Scotland, but have never done one in the USA. High on my list has been the Bourbon trail in Kentucky. Second on that list is this place.

Next we had a traditional Puerto Rican lunch. I had to explain to my friend the old 96er joke from The Great Outdoors.

After that we visited the Carabali Adventure Park and the Playa La Monserrate beach, north east of San Juan. We were hoping to do some 4-wheeling or horseback riding, but the park was super busy. So a walk on the beach was a pleasant substitute.

Next, we headed to Fajardo to do the BioBay tour on Laguna Grande.

This is a night kayak tour. At sunset, you start paddleing across the inlet from the ocean. Then, you enter a canopy covered river (mangrove?) and zigzag for about 30 minutes. After that, you arrive at the lagoon. They say there are only 5 places on the planet that have lagoons like this with luminescent creatures (Dinoflagellates). Due to the full moon and other climate impacts we didn't see much of the glow (wave your hands in the water and you could catch a sparkle here or there). In the end it was more of a nice night kayaking ride.
